Effortless Waves Tutorial

Waves Hair Tutorial

Happy Friday! One of my favorite (and easiest) ways I like to style my hair, is by throwing in a few loose waves. And while I love curls, waves are definitely my go-to look for an easy, every day style. Many of you have requested more hair tips & tutorials, so I’m excited to kick off 2016 with my most requested tutorial; tousled waves.

Here’s to happy, healthy hair!

Nexxus Hair Products

To achieve this look, simply start with clean, damp hair. I have been using the Nexxus New York Salon Care Color Assure Regimen and have been very happy with the results. I find myself to be pretty picky when it comes to hair products (aren’t we all?) and this regimen has worked wonderful for my hair. It’s so important to use a sulfate free shampoo when you have color treated hair. Here, you can read more hair tips for color treated hair.

PREP

Before blowdrying, use Nexxus New York Salon Care Oil Infinite Nourishing Hair Oil on towel dried hair. This stuff is the bomb. It will help you hair stay hydrated and looking healthy. I love products that can be used on wet or dry hair!

BLOW DRY

I section my hair when blowdrying. I find it easier to manage and it actually saves time! Here, I’m using the Pro Beauty Tools Ionic Blowdryer.  If you suffer from tangles, you have to try the wetbrush (I can’t believe it took me so long to discover this amazing tool). My hair gets very tangled when wet and this is the best thing I’ve tried to help manage the tangles!

PROTECT

After blowdrying, section your hair and prep for curling. It’s important to use a thermal protectant before using a curling iron or wand, and I like to use Nexxus New York Salon Care Promend Heat Protecting Mist. Not only does this product actually work, but it smells nice and can be used on wet or dry hair. I use 3-4 pumps on the bottom section of my hair to protect against dryness and breakage. After applying the mist, be sure to brush your hair before using the curling iron.

CURL

Now you are ready to throw in some waves. There are two things to keep in mind when creating waves.

  1. The bigger the barrel, the looser the curl. This is important because you do not want tight curls if you are trying to achieve loose waves (this is a 1 1/4 inch iron and I love it).
  2. Use more hair when curling. My secret to loose waves, is taking a 2-3 inch section of your hair in the curling iron. Typically, if you are wanting a traditional curl, you would only take a 1-1.5 inch section, but in this case, more is better.

Continue curling away from your face. To create a “messier” look, try curling in opposite directions. I typically like to keep the curl moving in the same consistent pattern, but changing it up a bit can definitely add some texture.

CREATE WAVES

To create the loose waves, I run my fingers through the curls right after using the iron. This is the opposite of what you would do if you were wanting tighter curls. I like to do this while the curl is still warm because it helps the hair fall into the perfect wave. You could also brush the curl out to create softer waves.

SET HAIR

Set your waves by using a flexible hold hairspray. I like to use Nexxus New York Salon Care Comb Thru Touchable Hold Finishing Mist. To achieve an effortless look, run your hands through the waves as your spray dries.  It holds the waves without making your hair stiff. Hairspray

Hi, love your blog. How long do you hold the curling iron on one section before letting lose?
