The Ultimate Dry Shampoo Guide

Dry Shampoo Review

If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know how much I love dry shampoo. It may just be my favorite product in my beauty bag.  I rely on it (almost) every day and I love how easy and convenient it is. I often get questions asking about my hair care routine & curling iron (read more about that here), but the most common question is about my dry shampoo. I published a few posts over the years reviewing dry shampoos, but since then, I have tried several others. I do have a favorite, but I know everyone’s hair is different, so I wanted to share a variety. I stand by each of these products and think they are the best of the best!

If you are new to the concept of dry shampoo, I highly suggest giving it a try. Not only does it absorb oil at the roots, but it gives volume, texture, and an instant refresh. It’s the perfect 2nd day (or 3rd day) styling aid. There are a few skeptics out there but I promise you, dry shampoo works!

I personally like to use dry shampoo at night. I throw my hair in a messy bun (this also helps hold curls for next day styling) then spray dry shampoo at the roots. This allows the product to really absorb all of the oil. I do not brush out until morning. When I do brush it out, I use a boar bristle brush. My teasing comb actually works perfect to brush out my roots. If the night time trick doesn’t work for you, then spray at roots before putting on your makeup. That will allow it to fully absorb before brushing out.

Here are a few that I have tried and recommend:

Shampure Dry Shampoo Review

BASIC DRY SHAMPOO: AVEDA SHAMPURE DRY SHAMPOO POWDER

This is a great dry shampoo powder. It has a nice, clean smell without being overpowering. I’ve actually gone through two bottles of this and my husband is constantly stealing it from me! I like this, but it can make my hair “ashy” if I overuse it. I would recommend Shampure for blondes or if you have highlights.

The product is lightweight and does not weigh my hair down. I think this would be ideal for thin or fine hair, but it works for thick hair too. This does not add any texture to your hair, its just a lightweight powder that absorbs oil. Pretty standard, but works really well!

Use by squeezing the bottle, and the powder will spray from the nozzle. My only complaint is that sometimes the powder gets clogged in the nozzle. I just have to tap it against the counter and then it breaks up and works again.

VOLUME, TEXTURE & REFRESH: OUAI DRY SHAMPOO

This is my favorite dry shampoo I’ve ever (ever!) used. I have purchased two bottles of the OUAI Dry Shampoo over the past few months and will continue to go back to this product. I talked about it last month on snapchat and I loved hearing your feedback. It seems like many of you are equally obsessed!

So why this dry shampoo? Well, for starters it absorbs all of the oil without making my hair feel sticky or look dry/ dull. It also has a subtle hold to add texture and volume at the roots. I love it! My hair is thick, but it tends to lack volume. I love using this because it gives a nice lift while still allowing me to run my hands through my hair.

My only issue with this is that the smell is pretty strong. Thankfully, it doesn’t stick around all day, but when you first apply, it is pretty fragrant. If you want to try risk free, I found it here for free shipping & free returns. I highly recommend trying this dry shampoo!

THE MOST VERSATILE PRODUCT: ORIBE DRY TEXTURE SPRAY

I’ve reviewed this product several times on here, and it is one I still stand by. In terms of versatility, this product has the others beat. It can be used for volume, texture, dry shampoo and a refresher on any hair type. The smell is 100% my favorite. Austin always comments on my hair when I use this, he loves the smell too!

I don’t use this so much for a dry shampoo, but actually for volume. I like to spray this on clean hair, directly under the top layer of my roots. I fold over to the opposite side and add some heat from my blowdryer. It makes for an instant lift without adding any sticky residue or crunchy feel. I’ve also used this on my 2nd day curls to give them a little texture and hold. It’s perfect if you want loose, tousled waves.

FOR THE GIRL ON THE GO: FEKKAI BLOWOUT HAIR REFRESHER

I was really excited to try this because I love the smell of all Fekkai products. This dry shampoo smells clean and fresh without being too overpowering or fragrant. This would be ideal for the girl on the go or if you work out on your lunch break. It really does make your hair smell great (like you just washed it!) and might be a good option to keep in your car or gym bag.

This is a great product for all hair types & colors. I like this because it does not make hair ashy and nor does it look “powdery” on darker hair colors. The Blowout Hair Refresher doesn’t offer any texture or grit, but it will give a lightweight hold at the roots.  All in all, this is a great product!

I was on the hunt for a new dry shampoo that really got my hair clean. It sounds like the OUAI is the best option. I’m so glad it’s available at Nordstrom! Thanks for a great post, doll.

Thanks for this post! I’ve been loving the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo, but I’m always looking for new options. Love the Oribe shampoo and conditioner, so I’ll have to try the texturizing spray too!

I’m curious if the QUAI dry shampoo is the same with the other brands that has this gross residue left on the hand after use? I would love to hear from you since you have the experience of using it. I’ve tried 3 brands (not to mention the names) and they all have the same result taking extra time to remove those residues left in my hair and hand.
